You would have to be a part of the Youtube Partnership Program.
A few examples of people on youtube that a part of the youtube partnership program are Fred, CommunityChannel, DaveDays, Happyslip, BoBurnham, LisaNova, ShayCarl, Sxephil and a lot more people.
To become a YouTube Partner, you must meet these minimum requirements:
* You create original videos suitable for online streaming.
* You own or have express permission to use and monetize all audio and video content that you upload — no exceptions.
* You regularly upload videos that are viewed by thousands of YouTube users.
How do YouTube Partners earn money?
"Our Partner Program is a revenue-sharing program that allows creators and producers of original content to earn money from their videos on YouTube. You can earn revenue from relevant advertisements that run against your videos using Google’s proprietary technology. The program is free to join."
More information about the Youtube Partnership Program here: http://www.youtube.com/partners
How much money do they make exactly? I think it all varies on your views. Here’s a blog on how much money a youtube partner makes by a guy with the youtube channel name "Nalts" who is also a part of the program: http://tinyurl.com/a73bkd
A guy on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/supermac18 was recently interviewed on a show on tv and he said he makes about $3,000 a month. So just imagine how much "Fred" the number one most subscribed on Youtube is making.
you have to get a partenership with youtube.
you have to get 100,000+ views on 20 videos and 10,000 subscribers
then you get a paycheck
they promote their videos.
promote your videos means that you pay a certain amount of money (however much you want) to pay to YouTube to advertise them. when people see your videos, you get paid. for example, for every view that you get, you want 1 dollar. so if you have 10 views, a simple 10 dollars. if you want to get paid 15 dollars, and you have 100 views, there’s a good 1500 in your hand.
Hope this answered your question!!
if you are popular enough you can apply for a partnership. This gives you ads on your videos. And views acculmate revenue.

Bob J said this: Setup your youtube account today, it is free and the sooner you do it the better. Start making videos with yourself or anything and put them on Youtube. Make sure not swear or do anything illegal, Once you have enought video views and subscribers, then you will be able to apply for a partnership at the bottom of the home page on youtube. Then you will be making money from youtube, you will need to register with google adsense, they will pay you. Cheques straight from Google, it is great.

Here is a story about MeMyselfandPi’s parntership to help explain you questions:

Step 1: You need at least 20,000 views on 20 different videos and 10,000 subscribers to become a partner. Then, you are offered a partnership.
Step 2: Just being a partner doesn’t give you money, though. Your income depends on how many viewers see the advertisement above your description for the video. To place an ad there, you must promote a video. In order to promote a video, absolutely ALL content must be yours, meaning no background music, no else’s video, etc.
Step 3: Promote a video by clicking the "Promote Video" icon. Past there, I’m not sure since I’m not a partner. But I’m sure its user-friendly.
